Film with Text Combination Supports ESL Learning
Playing the book alongside the movie is one of the most effective ESL approaches to literature because it gives learners two different doors into the same story. Research consistently shows that movies enhance communicative competence and expose students to authentic language, both official and vernacular . In my teaching, this approach works because the movie gives students visual anchors that support the text. When a learner sees a scene first, the book becomes less intimidating.
